Every Walter Peak ticket is, underneath, the same crossing from Queenstown plus what happens ashore — and that is exactly how the pricing works. Three choices decide your fare: which variant you book, which boat carries you, and for the BBQ, which slot you pick. This page walks through those three, the current per-person rates are in the table below, and the gaps — the things we have not verified — are called out rather than papered over.

About this experience

The classic combination: a cruise across Lake Whakatipu to Walter Peak High Country Farm, then a guided farm experience — a sheepdog demonstration, sheep shearing (weather permitting), feeding the animals — and afternoon tea before the boat back. The crossing takes about 45 minutes each way.

One thing to check at booking: the crossing runs either on the catamaran Spirit of Queenstown or on the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw. If riding the steamship is part of the appeal for you, pick the TSS Earnslaw option deliberately — and note that during the ship's annual maintenance (18 May to 27 June 2026) all crossings run on the Spirit of Queenstown.

Worth knowing before you choose the dinner slot: in the evening the visit is built around the meal, with little of the farm and its animals. Families who want the animal side are usually happier with the lunch departure, or with the farm tour.

The steamship on its own: a 1.5-hour return cruise on Lake Whakatipu aboard the TSS Earnslaw, the vintage coal-fired steamer — without going ashore at Walter Peak. On board you can look into the working engine room and browse the small onboard museum.

A caveat from the reviews: one traveller who took only the round trip found it expensive. If you were planning to see the farm anyway, the farm tour and BBQ variants include the same crossing — the cruise-only ticket is for people who want the ship itself, not the destination. During the ship's annual maintenance (18 May to 27 June 2026) this departure runs on the catamaran Spirit of Queenstown instead — if the steamship is the point, avoid that window.

The active variant: cruise to Walter Peak, then a guided horse trek of 40 to 45 minutes through the high-country station, in small groups of at most 6 riders per guide. The trek is beginner-friendly — no riding experience needed.

The rider limits are firm: minimum age 7 years, minimum height 120 cm, maximum weight 95 kg. Check them for every rider in your group before booking.

The three choices that decide your fare

1. The variant. Each of the five experiences has its own per-person rate, set by what it includes — the cruise on its own, the farm programme with afternoon tea, the meal at the homestead, the guided ride, or the garden visit with lunch. 2. The boat. Crossings are sold per vessel: the catamaran Spirit of Queenstown, or the steamship TSS Earnslaw, and the fare depends on which one you pick. Same lake, same farm — only the vessel differs. During the annual survey (18 May – 27 June 2026) only the catamaran sails, which also removes that choice from the checkout.

3. The slot (BBQ only). Lunch and dinner departures are priced per departure and differ in what you see ashore — the dinner slots are built around the meal and see little of the farm. Which slot suits you is covered on the BBQ page.

Why do two departures of the same tour cost different amounts?

Usually the boat: crossings run on the catamaran Spirit of Queenstown or on the steamship TSS Earnslaw, and each is priced separately. For the BBQ, lunch and dinner departures are also priced per slot. Check the vessel and slot next to the time when you book.

Are there child prices for Walter Peak tours?

The checkout shows per-age pricing for your departure — we have not verified the child fares and age bands ourselves, so we do not state them here. Note the horse trek has firm rider minimums (age 7, height 120 cm) independent of any fare.

Can I cancel a Walter Peak booking for free?

The farm tour, horse trek and Garden to Table pages confirm free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. For the BBQ and the cruise-only ticket, the binding terms are the ones shown at checkout for your specific departure.

Do prices include the boat crossing?

Yes — every Walter Peak experience is sold as one ticket that includes the return crossing from Queenstown. There is no separate ferry ticket to buy, and no other way to reach the farm.
