About this experience

The steamship on its own: a 1.5-hour return cruise on Lake Whakatipu aboard the TSS Earnslaw, the vintage coal-fired steamer — without going ashore at Walter Peak. On board you can look into the working engine room and browse the small onboard museum.

A caveat from the reviews: one traveller who took only the round trip found it expensive. If you were planning to see the farm anyway, the farm tour and BBQ variants include the same crossing — the cruise-only ticket is for people who want the ship itself, not the destination. During the ship's annual maintenance (18 May to 27 June 2026) this departure runs on the catamaran Spirit of Queenstown instead — if the steamship is the point, avoid that window.

From 18 May to 27 June 2026 the TSS Earnslaw is out of the water for its annual survey.

In that window, every crossing to Walter Peak runs on the catamaran Spirit of Queenstown. The farm tour, gourmet BBQ and horse trek continue as normal — only the vessel changes. But a cruise booked for the steamship experience loses its point: if the coal-fired steamer is why you are coming, do not book inside these dates.

The sailing schedule changes with the season, and we have not been able to verify a departure grid far enough ahead to publish one responsibly — a timetable that is confidently wrong is worse than none. What holds year-round: the crossing to Walter Peak takes about 45 minutes each way, the cruise-only trip runs about 1.5 hours, and every departure leaves from the RealNZ Visitor Centre at 88 Beach Street in Queenstown. Three timetable habits that pay off

Match the departure to the daylight. On late BBQ departures it gets dark soon after arrival at the farm — a reviewer on a 5pm sailing found little time to see the grounds after eating. If seeing Walter Peak matters, book earlier in the day. Check the vessel, not just the time. Two sailings minutes apart can be on different boats. Arrive unencumbered. The boats are cashless and there is no parking at the wharf — walk from central Queenstown or get dropped off.
